Getting Started — Official Setup Guide for Ledger Wallets

Welcome to Your Ledger Journey

Thank you for choosing a Ledger hardware wallet. This page, Ledger.com/Start®, is your official onboarding guide to set up, secure, and use your device safely. Whether you are new to crypto or already managing digital assets, following these steps ensures you start off on the right foot.

Because security is critical, always verify that you’re on the correct URL (https://ledger.com/start) and never rely on third‑party links or downloads.

Step 1: Unbox & Inspect

Begin by unboxing your device in a clean, secure environment. Check that the packaging is sealed and intact. Inside, you should find:

⚠️ Do not use a device that appears pre‑configured or tampered with. If in doubt, contact Ledger Support.

Step 2: Visit the Official Setup Page

In your browser, navigate manually (type) to https://ledger.com/start. Confirm that the SSL padlock is present and the domain is correct. This is the only official portal for setup and download of Ledger Live.

Avoid using search engine ads, QR codes from unverified sources, or links shared by others unless you confirm their authenticity.

Step 3: Download Ledger Live

On Ledger.com/Start®, you will find download links for the Ledger Live application for your platform (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS). Download, install, and launch the app. This will be your interface to manage your Ledger device and crypto assets.

Only download Ledger Live directly from this official page — never from mirrored or third‑party sites.

Step 4: Initialize or Restore Your Device

Open Ledger Live and choose whether to Set up as a new device or Restore from recovery phrase. If this is your first Ledger, choose the setup path:

  1. Connect your Ledger to your computer (USB or Bluetooth if supported)
  2. Select “Initialize as new device”
  3. Let the device generate a 24‑word recovery phrase
  4. Write down each word in order on the recovery sheet provided
  5. Confirm that you have recorded them correctly when prompted

⚠️ Never store your seed phrase digitally (screenshots, text files, cloud) or reveal it to anyone — it is the sole key to your funds.

Step 5: Create a PIN & Confirm

After initializing, your Ledger device will ask you to choose a PIN (typically 4–8 digits). Enter it securely on the device itself (not via computer). This PIN helps protect your device if it's lost or stolen.

Confirm the PIN as requested. Do not choose trivial codes like “1234” or “0000”. Choose something hard to guess but memorable to you.

Step 6: Install Crypto Apps & Add Accounts

In Ledger Live, go to the “Manager” section and install the apps for the cryptocurrencies you intend to use (e.g. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana). Each app enables support for that chain inside Ledger Live.

Once installed, switch to the “Accounts” tab and add an account for each asset you want to manage.

Step 7: Receive & Test Transactions

Request a receive address from your Ledger account in Ledger Live. Always verify the address on your device screen before sending it anywhere. Then send a small test transaction to that address to confirm everything is working as expected.

Once the test goes through successfully, your setup is validated and ready for routine use.

Step 8: Keep Firmware & Software Updated

Ledger and Ledger Live are periodically updated for security and new features. In Ledger Live, go to “My Ledger” to check for firmware or app updates. Follow the prompts to apply updates. These updates ensure your device remains secure and compatible.

Never install firmware from unverified sources or allow software that bypasses official checks.

Step 9: Secure Your Recovery Phrase & Plan Recovery

Store your 24-word recovery phrase securely, offline, and in a durable medium (paper, metal plate). Consider keeping it in a fireproof safe or other secure location. You may split the seed in multiple secure parts if you understand reconstruction protocols.

Practice a recovery on a spare device to ensure you can restore correctly in case your Ledger is lost, damaged, or stolen.

Common Issues & Troubleshooting

Device Not Recognized?

Try a different USB port or cable. Use direct ports (avoid hubs) and ensure the cable supports data (not just charging). Restart your computer if needed.

Checksum / Verification Errors

If Ledger Live or your device reports a mismatch in the firmware or authenticity verification, stop and do not proceed. Re‑download official files and try again. If problems persist, contact Ledger Support.

Forgot PIN?

If you forget your PIN, you can reset the device (factory reset) and recover using your 24-word seed. But losing both PIN and seed means losing access to your funds permanently.

Phishing & Fake Apps

Beware of impostor applications or websites. Always verify you’re on ledger.com/start and installing Ledger Live from the official source. Ledger Support will never ask for your recovery phrase.

Transaction Failures or Stuck Transactions

Check network fees and blockchain status. Sometimes congested networks or incorrect fee settings cause delays. Ledger Live may give options to speed up or cancel pending transactions depending on the chain.
